Municipio Calixto García157 Years celebrates the Calixteño people, and their traces are stamps of men and women who grow and work for a better society. Today, an enormous force of life and action is rising up, which is not an abstract matter; it is a people that, amidst the ups and downs, follows greater impulses, in the midst of the intensification of foreign sieges and of shadows that have not been able to dim the light of our plain, and they give us light in equal opportunities, never thought of before.

That is why we cannot talk about the emergence of our municipality without mentioning that before, and for many years, we were part of the Jurisdiction and then municipality of Holguin. So we were Holguiners from 1752 to 1963: two hundred and eleven years. We were the western and rural part of that old demarcation and what is our current territory was constituted, with some variations, by the neighborhoods of Las Calabazas, San Agustín de Aguarás, San Lorenzo, Omaja, Ciego la Rioja (Mir) and Aguarás.

It was not until the Revolution was consolidated in power and a reordering of the economy, political reorganization with a single party and the creation of new local administration bodies was proposed, that it was agreed to make changes in the existing territorial division. Thus, a new instance was created: the Region, an intermediate component between the province and the municipalities.

The name of our territory was not yet "Calixto García", in fact, in the press and other official documents it was called indistinctly: Municipal Mir, Municipal Buenaventura or with both names changing without distinction.

The headwaters were located in the heroic town of Mir, but not few people thought that there were two municipalities.

Our original commune had just over 39,000 people. It was considered almost entirely agricultural, limiting industrial production to two sawmills, seven small bakeries and two tobacco factories. The agricultural production was constituted by the farms of the town.

On July 21, 1963, the Municipal Committee of the United Party of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba (PURSC) was formed in the peasant community of "Calixto García," today known as Viviendas Campesinas, and within the People's Farm of the same name. Thus, the political-administrative direction of the new municipality was established and the municipality was made official. The combination of this triptych of the same name: farm, community, municipal committee and the intention of these new leaders to iron out certain disagreements between mireños and buenaventureños over the name and the headquarters of the head of the young municipality, ended up imposing in a short time the glorious name of the General of the Three Wars on all our territory.
